Dear friends of the HealthCapital cluster,

We hope this message finds you in good health. In the last couple of weeks, we visited several international conferences for Biotech and Medical Technologies. Our team was at the MedTech Conference in Anaheim, the BIOJapan, the BIO-Europe in Munich and the MEDICA in Düsseldorf. At the same time, international leaders from science and economy were in Berlin for the World Health Summit, the Falling Walls Conference and the Future of Medicine.

So, there are enough reasons to shed light on a topic that significantly influences not only our industry but also global health: Globalization in the healthcare industry. At the cluster HealthCapital Berlin-Brandenburg we strongly believe in:

  1. Global Exchange of Knowledge and Innovations:
The healthcare industry is increasingly shaped by a global exchange of knowledge and innovations. Research findings, medical technologies, and best practices are shared across borders to enhance healthcare worldwide.
  2. International Partnerships and Collaboration:
We are witnessing a rise in the formation of international partnerships between companies, research institutions, and healthcare facilities. Collaborative projects and cross-border cooperation enable more comprehensive and effective solutions to complex challenges.
  3. Improving Access to Healthcare Worldwide:
Globalization opens new avenues to improve access to healthcare services worldwide. Technological solutions and telemedicine contribute to ensuring high-quality care even in remote areas.
  4. Cultural Diversity in Healthcare:
Different cultural backgrounds and healthcare systems bring diversity to the healthcare industry. This not only promotes intercultural exchange but also allows for innovative approaches to addressing global health issues.
  5. Challenges and Opportunities:
Certainly, challenges come with globalization—differing legal frameworks, cultural disparities, and logistical obstacles need to be overcome. However, new opportunities and perspectives are also emerging for all stakeholders in the healthcare industry.

We look forward to further developments in this area and are excited to collaborate with you in shaping the future of international healthcare. For questions, suggestions, or the exchange of ideas, we are at your disposal.

Best regards,

Your
Dr. Kai Uwe Bindseil

MDC teams has explained how molecular changes in the cells alter gene regulation and can lead to Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Swapping just a single amino acid can play a decisive role in transforming healthy B cells into cancer cells. An international team led by ECRC researcher Stephan Mathas describes in “Nature Communications” how a point mutation in the transcription factor IRF4 profoundly alters gene regulation.

Charité ramps up cooperation with Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital

To further intensify their cooperation, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. Going forward, both institutions plan to work together even more closely in many areas.

MDC researchers reveal the role of interaction between nervous and immune system in the recovery of damaged heart muscles

Unlike humans, zebrafish can completely regenerate their hearts after injury. They owe this ability to the interaction between their nervous and immune systems, as researchers led by Suphansa Sawamiphak from the Max Delbrück Center now report in the journal “Developmental Cell.”

Scientists of the MDC-BIMSB have developed a technology to initiate and control organoids’ functioning and interacting

To make stem cells differentiate, scientists “feed” them with growth factors and embed them in a nutrient solution. There, the cells bunch together in tiny clumps and begin functioning and interacting as if they were in a real tissue. Previously, it was almost impossible to control this process. But now researchers led by Professor Nikolaus Rajewsky, Director of the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology of the Max Delbrück Center (MDC-BIMSB), have published a paper in Nature Methods describing the technology they used to both initiate and control the process.

Personalized cancer medicine: humans make better treatment decisions than AI - Charité study highlights limits of large language models in precision medicine

Researchers at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin have studied whether generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT can help with this step. This is one of many projects at Charité analyzing the opportunities unlocked by AI in patient care.
