Digital Health Innovations
One of our core competencies is digital health. Just a few weeks ago, we participated in DMEA 2024, the leading conference and exhibition in digital health. Advancements in Cardiovascular Treatment
Another significant highlight is the progress in treating cardiovascular diseases. In this newsletter, Prof. Volkmar Falk introduces the new building for the German Heart Centre at Charité. This future architectural masterpiece will be a compact, multi-story facility equipped with state-of-the-art operating rooms, cardiac catheter labs, and hybrid procedure rooms, setting new standards across Europe. Prof. Falk also discusses the green hospital approach, collaboration with industry partners, and the concept of "built appreciation" incorporated into the planning.

greenCHEM developing the chemical industry of the future Green chemistry is one of the central building blocks for moving from a linear consumption logic with fossil materials to a circular logic with regenerative materials. There are countless substances on the market that are produced synthetically and that need to be changed bit by bit to achieve sustainability. This applies in particular to the healthcare industry, where pharmaceutical products and new materials for medical technology, for example, could be made more sustainable through green chemistry. greenCHEM is a consortium of 29 partners working towards this under the coordination of the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) with the Chemical Invention Factory (CIF). The project is currently being funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to the tune of up to 10 million euros. We spoke to the coordinator of the joint project, Martin Rahmel, about the tasks, structure and future of the project. |

New building for cutting-edge cardiovascular medicine in Berlin Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin have merged their cardiac medical facilities to form the Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC). The DHZC is now getting a new building on Campus Virchow-Klinikum which will set new European standards with modern operating theaters, laboratories and hybrid rooms. The building is due to be completed in 2028. The state of Berlin is providing 286.9 million euros for the project, with the federal government contributing 100 million euros. We spoke to the Medical Director of Charité's German Heart Center and Director of the Clinic for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Prof. Volkmar Falk, about the new building. |

DMEA 2024: Berlin-Brandenburg Digital Health Ecosystem introduces itself The DMEA hosted a trade fair on digital health between April 9 and 11. The show offered around 18,600 participants, including some 800 exhibitors and over 350 speakers, a comprehensive range of events. The Berlin-Brandenburg capital region was again represented with a joint stand and a varied program. |

Cultimate Foods raises 2.3 million EUR seed funding from leading Biotech and Foodtech investors to revolutionize the alternative meat industry Cultimate Foods, a biotech startup based in Berlin’s Biocube and Hannover (Institut für Technische Chemie, Leibniz Universität Hannover), successfully closes its seed round to scale up production processes, expand commercial collaborations and operation.
The 2.3 million EUR round was led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), one of Europe’s leading seed investors. HTGF was joined by the Life Science ValleyWachstumsfonds, b.value AG and Kale United. Leading global Foodtech investor Big Idea Ventures also participated in this round.

How the body switches out of “fight” mode - Study in Nature unlocks how cortisone inhibits inflammation Cortisone and other related glucocorticoids are extremely effective at curbing excessive immune reactions. But previously, astonishingly little was known about how they exactly do that. A team of researchers from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Uniklinikum Erlangen have now explored the molecular mechanism of action in greater detail. As the researchers report in the journal Nature,* glucocorticoids reprogram the metabolism of immune cells, activating the body’s natural “brakes” on inflammation. These findings lay the groundwork for development of anti-inflammatory agents with fewer and less severe side effects.

Following Proteins on Their Journey - Team of researchers at Freie Universität Berlin develops new technique to release and study individual proteins in cells A research team led by biochemist Professor Helge Ewers from Freie Universität Berlin has developed a new technique for the light-mediated release and investigation of proteins in live cells. The technique makes use of a laser pulse to control the release of tagged protein molecules within a cell, allowing for the molecules’ function to be more clearly observed. The team believes that this method has a wide variety of potential applications in future scientific research. The study, titled “An Optogenetic Method for the Controlled Release of Single Molecules” has been published in the scientific journal Nature Methods.

When thoughts flow in one direction - Charité study in Science decodes wiring of the human neocortex Contrary to previous assumptions, nerve cells in the human neocortex are wired differently than in mice. Those are the findings of a new study conducted by Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and published in the journal Science.* The study found that human neurons communicate in one direction, while in mice, signals tend to flow in loops. This increases the efficiency and capacity of the human brain to process information. These discoveries could further the development of artificial neural networks.
