Dear , Welcome to the latest issue of the HealthCapital newsletter,
Berlin’s strength in life sciences has never been built on excellence alone. It has been built on the ability to connect outstanding science, clinical practice, and entrepreneurial ambition across a uniquely collaborative ecosystem.
As global competition for talent, technologies, and investment intensifies, we are strengthening the infrastructures that turn Berlin’s scientific excellence into health innovations with global impact. Facilities such as Si-M – The Simulated Human and the Berlin Center for Advanced Therapies (BeCAT) strengthen our capacity to translate research into diagnostics, therapies, and real-world patient benefit.
This ambition is reflected in the recently launched Deep Tech Berlin Agenda, which places technology transfer and innovation at the center of the city’s future growth. The launch of Si-M and BeCAT demonstrates how these goals are already becoming reality.
Si-M is developing innovative human disease models that help researchers better understand complex diseases and improve therapeutic development. BeCAT provides the infrastructure required to advance novel cell and gene therapies and other advanced therapy approaches towards clinical application. Both facilities address critical bottlenecks in biomedical innovation and help bridge the gap between basic research and patient care.
More than individual projects, Si-M and BeCAT serve as key nodes within Berlin’s life sciences ecosystem, connecting universities, research institutes, hospitals, companies, and investors. They illustrate how strategic investments in research infrastructure can foster collaboration, accelerate innovation, and translate scientific excellence into real-world impact. In this issue, we explore these two landmark facilities and examine why state-of-the-art research infrastructures have become essential assets in the global competition for talent, technologies, and biomedical innovation.
The strength of Berlin’s life sciences ecosystem is also reflected in recent scientific achievements. New work by Prof. Leif Sander and his team at Charité on the treatment of a patient infected with the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, as well as findings on post-exposure prophylaxis, provides valuable insights for the management of highly dangerous infectious diseases. Together with recent funding for the development of a new Ebola vaccine by Minapharm and its Berlin-based subsidiary ProBioGen, these developments highlight how scientific excellence, clinical expertise, and advanced research infrastructure can work together to address global health challenges.
With kind regards from Berlin Dr. Kai Uwe Bindseil Berlin Partner for Business and Technology |

Interview | Prof. Alexander Meyer At the end of 2025, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC) founded the Institut für Künstliche Intelligenz in der Medizin (IKIM). The institute’s areas of focus are the application-oriented development of AI and its evidence-based use in clinical settings, research into methods to make AI decisions transparent for doctors and a fast transfer of research results into practice and teaching. The institute is headed by Prof. Alexander Meyer, who also took on the newly created professorship for AI in medicine. Our interview with him mainly focused on the institute’s role within Charité and potential points of connection for industry. |

Cell therapy successful in treating severe rheumatoid arthritis Immunotherapies such as CAR T-cell therapy are used primarily to treat cancer. In the future, these patient-specific therapies, manufactured from patients’ own immune cells, could also help cure autoimmune diseases. Six patients with particularly severe rheumatoid arthritis have now received this treatment at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. In the journal Nature Medicine*, the researchers report the results from the world’s first clinical trial of its kind: Disease activity decreased substantially in all participants. By the end of the observation period, three of the patients no longer required any medication for rheumatoid arthritis. |

Slow Breathing Can Influence Brain Activity and Decision Behavior A new study from the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke (DIfE) and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin shows for the first time that targeted control of human breathing rhythm can influence decision behavior by modulating heart and brain function. The research team led by Prof. Soyoung Q Park was able to demonstrate that prolonged exhalation increases heartrate variability and brain’s reward sensitivity, thus enabling us to make bolder decisions. The study was published in the journal Neuron. |
